Guard against cybercrime - check the web address!

12 August 2022 - Landsbankinn

The investigation into fraud perpetrated against customers this summer is progressing well, according to a statement from the police.

We urge customers to access Landsbankinn online banking directly through the Bank’s website by entering landsbankinn.is in the browser field rather than use search engines.

Created fake websites

In the case currently under investigation, fake websites were created to look like Landsbankinn’s using URLs that were similar to the Bank’s actual web path. One such example is landsbankinnis.co rather than landsbankinn.is. The fraudsters then took out Google ads for their fake page. As a result, a Google search for Landsbankinn could lead to the fake page and some customers clicked that link. The fake website asked people to enter their username and password which the fraudsters could then use to transfer funds from online banking, with certain restrictions.

We strongly recommend that customers always access online banking directly through the Bank’s website, i.e. by entering landsbankinn.is. If search engines are used, please check the URL thoroughly to make sure it is correct. Landsbankinn’s URL is landsbankinn.is.

In this case, the criminals were in some cases able to defraud customers of their funds. We took action as soon as we learned of this scheme and were able to prevent further damage. The Bank also notified the police.

Cybercrime is constantly on the rise, increasing the importance of cyber security and awareness of possible risks.
