Beware of internet fraud and false messages

The summer months usually see an increase in attempted internet fraud. Scammers may be hoping that people on vacation are more likely to thoughtlessly click on links or fail to read text messages or e-mails carefully before responding to them.

If you provide scammers with your credit card number or online banking credentials, you may lose large amounts – even your entire savings. Be careful, use common sense and be wary of all messages where you are asked to do something, e.g. click on a link, log in or provide payment information, particularly if you did not initiate the communication.

What should I do to protect against fraud?

Keep the following in mind in order to protect against attempted fraud:

  1. Be very careful when you receive e-mail or text messages that contain links.
  2. Be especially careful if you did not expect a message from the sender in question. Are you sure the message is real?
  3. Fake text or e-mail messages can appear very convincing. The text may also be written in error-free and fluent Icelandic (or another language).
  4. A common fraud method is to copy real websites (e.g. an online banking site). A fake site can look exactly like the real thing.
  5. If you clicked on a link that took you to a website or app, you should never provide online banking credentials, credit card information or other sensitive information. You should rather open the website of the company or organisation in the usual way and log in there.
  6. Banks will never send you links to an online banking site or app where you have to log in.
  7. Banks will never initiate contact, e.g. by sending a message asking you to enter your online banking credentials, credit card information, etc.
  8. Scammers are also known to call people to trick them into providing credit card numbers, online banking credentials or other such information.
  9. You must change your password immediately if you have provided your username and password on a fraudulent site.

What should I do if I’m the victim of fraud?

Contact your bank as soon as possible if you suspect that you have been the victim of fraud. You can contact Landsbankinn by calling 410 4000, e-mailing landsbankinn@landsbankinn.is or via Messenger. You can report the fraud to the police by sending an e-mail to cybercrime@lrh.is.

If your card or card number is stolen, you can block it immediately in the app. You can also contact us (see above) or call Valitor, tel. 525 2000.
